Is home birth right for me?
Considerations in choosing a provider:
What are your top priorities in labor and birth?
In what setting would you like to labor, is it the same setting you’d like to birth in?
What experience are you seeking and why does it hold value to you?
What are you looking for in a provider?
In the midwifery model of care, you form a personal and trusting relationship with your midwife, where informed decision making and autonomy is valued. You are choosing to labor and birth in your home, with access to your personal comforts in a non medical setting.
Am I a good candidate for homebirth?
Are you relatively low risk and healthy?
Do you have a strong desire to birth in an out of hospital setting?
Are you willing to put time into reading the evidence based research provided?
Homebirth is a safe and viable option for many people. Many families choose homebirth due to the desire for a low intervention birth, in a setting in which they feel comfortable, with a provider they know and trust. Evidence shows that most people will labor and birth best in an environment that is familiar and safe to them, allowing for the physiological process of birth to unfold, undisturbed and unhurried, patiently monitored by a trained professional. Evidence also shows that in the United Sates around 90% of people who plan to birth at home will, without need for transport or hospital based care. Evidence also shows that when hospital based care is desired or needed it is often non emergent.
